ABOUT THE ARTISTS

MICHIYAYA Dance presents their international founding company member and dance artist Núria Martin Fandos in For the Moment. MICHIYAYA Dance is a femme-centric contemporary dance theater company co-founded in fall 2015 by New York natives, Anya Clarke (Long Island University Brooklyn, BFA) and Mitsuko Verdery (Carnegie Mellon University, BFA). Together they produce multidisciplinary work that synthesizes Clarke’s visceral yet cerebral movement with Verdery’s contextual landscape to create work that is queer, sensual, and physical. MICHIYAYA Dance has been supported by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Opportunity Fund, among others. They have been presented by Yale University, Brooklyn Museum, Andy Warhol Museum, La MaMa Galleria, and more. Thriving as a powerful group of femme voices, MICHIYAYA Dance has been featured by Thinx, Vice i-D, Medium, and Dance Enthusiast, among others. michiyayadance.org

Spline unfolds the exploration of one's physical and psychological boundaries. MICHIYAYA Dance discovers the systems in which we create and are created for us to conform to certain parameters. Industrial, biological, and interpersonal systems are challenged through a variety of narratives. Ideas of mental disorders, individuality, and coexistence are investigated. Incorporated into Spline's concept will be the life and physical voice of Co-Artistic Director Mitsuko Verdery's grandfather, Pampa. Pampa's life experiences, and relationships serve as an inspiration for the work. The word spline is defined as a key fitting into the grooves of a wheel, integrally with the shaft to allow movement of the wheel. The definition of spline is a great impetus for the work as it explains Clarke and Verdery's interest in the source and function of a problem, the physical and psychological boundaries involved in life.
